Tom Thomson is known as one of the Canadian artists of the Group of Seven. The Group of Seven, formerly known as the Algonquin School, was a group of Canadian landscape painters from 1920 to 1933 who depicted Canadian landscapes. His early oil paintings are of quite meticulous realism, right down to sketches like The Canoe (1912). He would become very familiar with paddling in open canoes like this one over the next few years.
